9am and 11am Preschool (3 & 4 year olds)

This class is designed to help some of our youngest feel comfortable in a church community, with introductions to our buildings and the people who work in them. Children begin each Sunday with a gathering circle, where they light a chalice and sing together. Each lesson includes a story about Michael and Sally, building familiarity. Parents, especially those visiting for the first time, are welcome to stay. Because of the manipulative and group skills required, children must be 3 years of age as of August 31. Preschool children go immediately to their class upon Sunday arrival and do not attend the beginning of service. Parents are to pick up their children once service is concluded.

9am and 11am Kindergarten-1^st grade

A Discovering Year nurtures children's spiritual and religious growth through connections to their ever-widening environment. They explore selves, friendships, families, church, nature, and religious and cultural days. Through ritual, sharing times, quiet times, crafts, activities, singing and music, games and movement, stories and talks, they learn to appreciate the worth of each person, to work and play cooperatively, to express feelings, to celebrate human diversity, and to feel part of their UU community.

9am and 11am 2^nd-3^rd Grade

Character building through stories through the world’s religions is the focus for this year. Our UU sources invite us to examine the world’s religions for guidance in our spiritual and ethical lives. Moral Tales begins this process for 2^nd and 3^rd grade children by telling the stories from the World’s major religions and examining how the stories inspire us to be good people. Through the stories, children gain tools to discern ethical action and gain experience in spiritual practices to continue a lifelong religious formation.

9am and 11am 4^th and 5^th grades

The 4^th and 5^th grade will explore major themes in world religions such as love, forgiveness, respect, and tolerance. This year will focus on the teachings of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faiths. Through learning the teachings of these faiths we will discover what is meaningful and pertinent to us as Unitarian Universalist. One unique addition to this year is our once a quarter field trip to meet other children from different faiths and to see different churches and Social Justice projects which will help children engage in their faith.

I hope you are enjoying this sun as much as I. More importantly, I hope you bring some of the joy from this week to church with you this Sunday. We are in our last two weeks of our Religious Education Program. It is time to celebrate and share what we have learned.

For May 16 and May 23rd all of our classes will be looking at what they learned, celebrating friendships made, and thanking their teachers on the journey. If you could not get to church much this year, it does not matter, we still want you to celebrate with us.

Back in the Stream of Life

It is time for Confession (well maybe not confession) but certainly a time to acknowledge where I could grow. This winter was dark, as many of you experienced. I heard from many families who said "We are just out of it this year" or " We can't seem to get it together." I know that feeling because I, too, am raising a family. I know that need for down time and I know that need for rest and renewal. I also know how important it is to be part of a faith community. I feel the tension between being present for my community's needs and coming to church for my renewal. Trust me! there are days, all I can do is sit quiet, not even begin to pray, much less teach. I know this; as many of you know this.

And yet, there is something I forgot. I forgot the constant stream of life. The constant life-affirming love that shows up, whether I see it or not. I was so busy running around, trying to get things done that I forgot that love was there with me, to help me. That love is the love we find in community. It is an energy that takes us beyond our needs and failures to our place of potential and wholeness. It is the love we need to move through our daily lives. It is the love that brings us to church, not because we get something but because our people need us in some way. You never know who needs a quiet smile or warm handshake.

I was reminded of this need one Sunday when a preschooler needed to use the "potty." The teacher had her hands full and so I took him to the men's room and stood outside the door. After he came out, he gave me a huge hug and said, "You are my best friend." It has been several weeks since, and every week he comes to me, hugs me and says "You are still my best friend." All I did was hold the door, but it was what he needed, it was an action that showed him he is cared for. It was a shared felt sense of love.

It is a time of many asks. I am aware of this. The RE program is asking for your registration and your time, the operating fund drive is asking for financial pledge, and many of our ministries are asking for your attention and service. Through all this I hope you tap into that source of life-affirming love. I hope you take time to remember your wholeness and potential and realize that the greatest need of your community is you. We need you, to be us.

I truly believe that as you commit to being present with us; sometimes coming to fill your cup and sometimes coming to fill others. It will become an instinct to offer what you can when you can. To know that your community is pulling together to grow in our life-affirming love.

Children and Youth Ministry Update December 20

This Sunday we explore the Christmas Story, and learn about the Latino/a celebration of Los Posadas. Which asks the question "Do you have room?" This is a pertinet question around the holiday season regardless of your chosen faith tradtion, or the way you name god, or even if you name god at all. Do you have room? Do you have room in your heart to give and recieve love? Do you have room in your life to revel in sacred and mystery? Do you have room in your hands to do the work the world asks of you? I invite you to think on these things, we will be invitiing your children to think about their values and the way values are represented in hoiliday celebration. This would be a great time to discuss with your children your traditions, why you have them and what they mean to you. The fact is we all have room to grow.

I hope this e-mail finds you warm and toasty. I know my family has come to more fully appreciate hot tea and cinnamon toast over the past few weeks. This is just a quick e-mail to let you know about RE plans for the month.

December 13 (music Sunday)

Nursery and Preschool begin at 9am and 11am

Children in grades K and up first go to worship then proceed to their Religious Education classes.

This week all children will be learning about the Hanukkah celebration of our Jewish friends. The children will explore their experiences of miracles and hear the Jewish story of the holy oil that lasted for 8 days instead of 1. UU’s believe that everyday life is a miracle that is why our first principle in the respect the inherent worth and dignity of all people. UU’s also believe everyone has the right to choose their own religion. Your children will have time to reflect, create and play games this Sunday.

Middle School, YES-U meet at 11am and Youth Group meets at 6:30pm

This week all of the children will hear the Christmas story told from the Latina/o Culture. They will learn how UU’s believe that every person has the spark of divinity within us and that each person works to be the best person they know how to be. They will also have time to create animals for a crèche to retell the story in their own homes. This session will help children grow in their understanding of the meaning of the holiday season.

Middle School, YES-U meet at 11am and Youth Group meets at 6:30pm

December 27th (one Service at 10am) There will only be child care for ages 5 and under on this day, no Religious Education.

Children and Youth Ministry Update November 29

Special Program for Children in grades K-6

Prayer is a language of the heart, a secret place where a person grows to know themselves, others and earth more fully. Prayer is about being thankful, asking for help, and becoming comfortable with one’s self. Prayer can take many forms: walking, singing, sitting in silence, working with your hands. Above all, prayer is about intentionality. It is about opening the heart to connect with the loving spirit in all life.

Today’s workshop with the children focuses on many ways to pray. We heard the story, “In God’s Name” which tells about people who fight over what to call God, then God goes away. When the people learn that God has many names, God returns to the people. As UU’s we believe their are many ways to experience and understand God. Prayer is about taking the time to connect with the Spirit of Life and Love, this is how many UU’s have come to experience God.

Stations: (after the story children were invited to do activities in stations)

Prayer Wheels: From the Buddhist tradition, it is believed spinning a prayer wheel is the same as reciting a prayer. In our station, children were asked to explore what good things they wanted to create in the world. Every time they spin their prayer wheel, they will be reminded of the goodness they want to produce.

Prayer Flags: From the Buddhist tradition, flags are printed with images, prayers and mantras and hung outside of homes and sacred places. The wind which passes over the flags carries to good intentions all through the earth.

Soul Collage: Simple collages made of images that speak to one’s hearts desire. Children were asked to find images of things that create joy in their lives. Reminders of joy and beauty help children remember the love that surrounds them. IN addition to being reminded of joy, children are encouraged to consider how they actions create joy of others.

Yoga: from the Hindu Tradition, poses and stretches which engage the body, mind, and heart to create unity. In Yoga children learn how to use their bodies to create peace within.

Reading: taking time to engage the mind is a wonderful prayer, we are using our human gifts to learn and change the world. The books selected for this station focused on cultivating peace and joy in one’s heart and life.

As we begin the time of Advent, a time of waiting and anticipation, I hope that prayer practice becomes a tool for your family to center and realize the abundance of love in your home. The first week of Advent focuses on being a messenger of peace. Using prayer to cultivate peace within one’s heart is the first step in bringing peace to the world.

DON'T FORGET TO SET YOUR CLOCKS FOR THE TIME CHANGE!

Happy November,
This month brings many activites and chaces for reflection. I hope all families are able to share in the joy of cooking together, snuggling with blanket and a good book, discerning how to give to the community, watching the leaves turn and fall. It really is amazing how many small treasured moments can exist in one day, if we only take the time to notice.

RE is about taking time to notice the spirit. We make a special time each week to think about our spirits, our friends, and our actions. We make time to remember how to be a good person and to find new ways to grow. We make time to connect with oneanother in joy and sorrow. We take time to be fully human and fully awake.

Happy October, we can feel that fall has arrived. This Sunday is an RE meet and greet, parents are invited to come to the RE classrooms at 10:20 and 12:20 to see what the children are doing and to meet the RE teachers.

This Sunday begins our Summer RE program. Children go directly to the Education Center. All Children must be signed in by their parent.

Hope and Song in Mississippi: ESUC Youth Trip to Mississippi with the Total Experience Gospel Choir

June 21st 6:30pm
Last summer 15 youth & adults from East Shore teamed up with the Total Experience Gospel Choir to journey to Texas and Mississippi, to provide relief for homes devastated in Hurricane Katrina. The group also travelled to Pastor Pat Wright's original home in Carthage, Texas, and participated in many powerful spiritual, cultural and group experiences. Alex Chmaj has put together a complete documentary film of this journey, and will be presenting it for our congregation on Sunday June 21, at 6:30 in the ESUC Sanctuary. Please join us as we share our story of fellowship, faith and GREAT gospel music! All Ages Welcome.

Youth Pilgrimage to Translyvania

March 31st is the deadline to sign up for the Youth Pilgrimage to Transylvania. Contact Michelle Conklin, dre@eastshoreunitarian.org)

ESUC's Youth Ministry is sponsoring a pilgrimage to our partner church in Transylvania.
We plan to travel during late June/early July of 2010.

We believe this trip will help our youth deepen their understanding of Unitarian Universalism as a historical faith with many expressions, make ties with the international Unitarian movement, and give a chance to engage in dialogue and community building with Transylvanian youth working for positive social change.

The criteria for youth joining us are as follows:

Be between the ages of 15-18
Articulate through an essay why you would like to go on this trip (due on April 19th, 2009)
Be in a good state of health (physically and mentally)
Commit to all educational/planning meetings and fundraising events

At this time we estimate the cost of the trip to be $3000 per traveler.

We will have an information and planning meeting on April 19th at 5:30pm. Parents and Youth are asked to attend.

Sunday February 1st 6:30pm Laure Simons, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, is offering a course in Collaborative Problem Solving for parents of children and youth. You can sign up in North Room on Sunday morning.

Information for 11am Families

The 2nd and 3rd grade classes have combined. We hope to serve our community better by asking for less volunteers, However, this does mean our class is bigger. Please review behavior expectations with your children. And Please remember to Thank Kristen Feuerstein, Debbie Turner and Susan Proebsting for volunteering ALL year!

The 4th and 5th grade will be invited to choose between two programs. RE and Drama Workshop. Walter Andrews, Rita Bout, and Doug Parker began a Drama workshop where each week the children will put on a little skit that explores our UU Principles and History. Linda Berg, Karen Dykstra and Robin Christy will lead an RE classroom which also explores UU Principles and History through stories, activities and art. Please talk with your child about these great opportunities and ask which program they would like to visit.

December 21st Middle School Field Trip

The 11am Middle School Group Y-TES (Young Teens exploring Spirituality) Will be going on a field trip.

All parents are asked to RSVP to Michelle Conklin (dre@eastshoreunitarian.org) by Saturday 5pm.

The youth will meet at East Shore at 10:30 and carpool to St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Factoria. We will attend a Holy Eucharist Worship Service and meet wit one of the Priests.

The youth are expected to return to East Shore around 12:30pm.

We need drivers for this trip, please let Michelle know if you are able to drive.

Shoeboxes of Joy

What is it? “Shoeboxes of Joy” is about the joy of giving. It is built on the simple notion that each of us has a genuine desire to give to others…but we aren’t sure how or what to give.

Who benefits? Everyone! “Shoeboxes of Joy” are delivered to low-income elderly and/or disabled individuals in our community who may not have extended family or friends nearby during the holidays. Ultimately…you benefit by being able to make a small gift of generosity that means so much to one person.

How does it work? Everyone is invited to donate items to our Shoeboxes of Joy prorgam. On the back of this page is a list of things to donate. The children in the Preschool through First Grade class will box the items and decorate the wrapping paper. ESUC adults will deliver the boxes to Cathloic Charities.

Bring in your Donated Items by November 30 for our children to make the boxes!

This month's session will be facilitated by Carol Reicht, East Shore member and mental health professional focusing on youth. We will explore the questions parents have on their minds and how the church can provide education and reflection to help with those questions.
